Premiership - what's at stake?

Kicking off in August, the Premiership pits 18 teams against each other, home and away, over the course of 10 gruelling months.

At the end of the season the top team is crowned Champions and automatically qualifies for the UEFA Champions League.

The teams finishing second and third also qualifies for next seasons UEFA Champions League. Fourth, fifth and sixth places in the Premiership also qualify for Europeao wins the domestic cup competitioons an extra European place has gone to the team finishing seventh.

At the other end of the final season table, the teams who finish in the bottom 3 places - 15 to 18 - are relegated (demoted) to the Championship.

What happened in the Premiership 2008/9

For much of the 2008/09 season the Premiership title race was a close race between Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. Although it was undecided until the final few games, Manchester United finished ahead of Liverpool in one of the closest finishes in recent years.

Chelsea and Arsenal took the 2 final UEFA Champions League places while Aston Villa, Everton and surprisingly Fulham took the Europa Cup places.

At the other end of the table, West Bromwich Albion were first confirmed as relegated but the other relegation places were not settle until the final games of the season. In the last game shoout outs, defeats for Middlesbrough and Newcastle United sent them crashing in to the Championship, with Sunderland and Hull City surviving in the Premiership.

Top title winners

By winning the title in 2008/09 Manchester United joined Liverpool at the top of the most top tier English titles table.... an amazing 18 each. Manchester United have won 11 titles in the last 17 years to close the gap following the 70's and 80's dominance of the merseysiders.

Arsenal sit in third place on 13 titles, Everton have 9, Aston Villa 7 and Sunderland 6.
